Where I’m From … Leroy Samuels, January 2010
I am from the gutter where everybody has more then two strikes
I am from the Boulevard of Broken Dreams
From the educationally starved and the ignorantly full
I am from the place were flowers are aborted
The place were there are no roses that grew from concrete
I am from the world of no family reunions and great sense of humor
From Madrid and Damon and Walker
I am from the comedic and very argumentative
From a place where women are highly respected and treated like equal people
I am from Christian while at the same time lacking it because I don’t go to church
I’m from Barbados, curry chicken and rice and peas
From the family of terrorists who were caught attempting to blow up a synagogue
The place where a cousin of mine was the first of many generations to go to college
And where there is a grandmother no one comes to see
————————————————————————————————————————————— Where I’m From … Brandon Vializ, January 2010
I am from the busy streets of New York City
From greasy pizza slices and Chinese food buffets
I am from the third house on the right, illuminated with light
From where the fireplace stays burning at night
I am from summer dandelions and red rose petals
I am from the New Year’s get together, loud and confident
From Justin and Cheyenne, from Vializ
I am from the cooking of new foods and the arguing over who has to wash dishes
From, “Don’t push your luck,” and “Always keep your head up!”
I am from Sunday morning mass, pay attention and take notes like it’s class
I’m from the Bronx, from rice and beans and flan
From the family that sent me packing to PR and felt bad because I said it was too far
I am from photo albums locked up in treasure chests
Keeping old memories safe for the future

Where I’m From … Natasha Ramnath, January 2010
I am from miracles, from the heart and soul
I am from the house by the water, cold winters, and breezy summers
I am from the hydrangea plants, tulips, and my grandma’s gardens
The bright colors and soft scents
I am from the family that shares everything and shows you love even if your a stranger
From Grandma Betty and Grandpa Joe Ramnath.
I am from the generation that is expected to succeed
And strive for more than our ancestors had
From the world where animals are your friends
And where Santa only comes when you’re sleeping on Christmas Eve night
I am from the religion of many Gods
Although I lost faith after many negative occurrences in my life.
I’m from my parents of Guyana, South America with sugar cane and cream soda
From the father who I lost and will never see again, the mother who fought
And the grandparents who were always there and never gave up
